he patent law option in mechanical engineering leads to a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering while providing a strong foundation in fundamental principles of patent law and the influences of the US patent system on modern engineering design. A student in this option obtains background that can lead to work as a technical specialist in a patent law firm or in the patent department of an industrial employer. The option also provides excellent preparation for pursuit of a subsequent law school degree in intellectual property law.

Note: 1. Phil 2135 is required in place of a humanities elective 2. For the 5 year BS/MS program the total credits are increased by 3. A 3-credit graduate level technical elective course is taken in the 7th or 8th semester, chosen in consultation with the undergraduate advisor.
Technical Electives:
Shall be selected from among the MAE 3000, 4000, or 6000 level courses, except that the folloing are excluded: MAE 3171, MAE 4172, MAE 6298, MAE 6299, MAE 6999. All technical electives must be approved by the undergraduate advisor. Technical courses from other departments (3000, 4000, or 6000 level) may be permitted, on a case by case basis, if approved by both the undergraduate advisor and department chair.
